10 Mar Diamond in the rough
Check out what we found hanging out under a bench at Brea Auto Electric. Yup its a ’61=’62 356 Porsche transaxle and when we first saw it, rough was the word. But, that was only on the outside as it had been taken out of a wreck nearly 30 years back and been sitting, forgotten ever since. Doug, Brea’s owner and Sam did a little dancing and our end of the deal was a complete rehab. Shan, Rancho’s resident Porsche guru dove head long into the project and literally re manufactured the transaxle from the shift selector rod to the TO bearing and everything in between. Only the very finest NOS components were used and each part was thoroughly checked for wear or damage including magnafluxing where deemed necessary. Fitting to precise OEM specs, completely refurbishing the entire drum brake assembly and flawlesssly cleaning, inspecting and finishing the case were all part of the rehab. Really is a thing of beauty and will make a perfect addition to the finest 356 restoration project. Better yet, as Doug didn’t have a home for the trans we now have it on the shelf here at Rancho just waiting for the perfect home.
